We Are Not Alone on the Journey
Driving through Maryland this summer, I spotted a large bear dashing out of the woods and down a steep bank ahead on my right. In an instant I calculated I had enough time to slow down and let the head-strong bear cross the road. But as I started to alert my family to the magnificent creature, my thoughts turned from awe to fear. I could hear--and then saw in my left minor--an SUV passing me on my left. I suddenly felt trapped. Should I roll down my window and stick my arm out and wave? Was I blocking their view of the bear? Did they not see the bear was going to cross in front of me? Would they go zooming by on my left and crash when the bear struck them? There was no time to roll down my window, so I slammed down hard on the horn. Whether the SUV driver saw the bear or heard the horn, I do not know, but they did slow in time to let the bear pass. The incident reminded me that we are not alone on our spiritual journeys. We have brothers and sisters driving beside us. But how accountable are we to each other? Are we willing to blow the horn about spiritual dangers when it appears only an endless stretch of red median flowers lines the path of a brother or sister?
