LORD of All
From early childhood a keen sense of the rights of ownership is evident in most children, at least in the United States. "Its mine!" is an all too familiar statement from the mouths of toddlers. As we grow older, often not much changes except for the value of the objects claimed. Ps. 24:1 speaks of ownership as well, but proclaims a different owner than is usually claimed by people. Everything in this world is the LORD's, declares the writer, David; even the people who live in the world and who love to claim parts of it as their very own are God's. Rather than viewing this truth as sad, it can actually make the child of God very glad. To know that the Owner of all is our heavenly Father makes us privileged children indeed! A great freedom comes when one isn't driven to own and possess as much as possible, but we can rather approach life as simply enjoying all that is already owned by the Father. May we all grow in this fundamental understanding of following God--that all we think of as ours (time and talents, possessions and wealth) are owned by the One whose children and stewards we are.
