God Invites Us to His Table

Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. --Rev. 3: 20 (NRSV)
Context: Rev. 3: 14-22 (NRSV)

The theme of the recent national assembly of the Mennonite Church USA, meeting in Atlanta Georgia, USA, centered around the slogan, "God's Table; Y'all Come!"

Using this metaphor, we acknowledge that God is inviting us, as persons who have not been following and obeying him, to sit down and share in his food and fellowship. Sitting at the table with Jesus can energize us, fill us, give us rest, give us acceptance and challenge us to live as he wants us to live.

God's invitation is open and free; his call comes to us to in our disobedience and sinfulness. However, as we come we are faced with his call to forgiveness and obedience. In this passage (Rev. 3: 14-22), God is reproving the people of the church at Laodicea for their lack of commitment. He calls them "wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked." (v. 18) Thus God's invitation is a call to free fellowship and deep commitment to himself.

Prayer: God, we know that we have disobeyed, and we accept your free invitation to eat at your table. Help us to be fully committed to you. Amen.
