Hidden Treasure

"...if you look for [wisdom] as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God." --Proverbs 2:4-5 (NIV)
Context: Proverbs 2: 1-6 (NIV)

I recently finished reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the story, the main character comes into possession of a map to a pirate's buried treasure. He shares his secret with several trusted adults and they all immediately begin planning the expedition to go and retrieve the treasure. They aren't the only ones interested in the treasure, however, and the rest of the story is the adventures and misadventures that result from the pursuit of the treasure.

The lure of hidden treasure is a powerful one, and one which we all readily understand. In this Proverbs passage, the writer calls us to pursue wisdom as though it were hidden treasure. In verse 6, we learn that true wisdom comes from God, and so the pursuit of wisdom is the pursuit of God.

The characters in Treasure Island were immediately ready to drop everything and go after the treasure. How ready are we to pursue God with the same passion and commitment? How would our lives change if we viewed God and His word the Bible as hidden treasure?

Prayer: Our God, our Lord, thanks for giving us your treasure. Help us to live with true appreciation for the value and meaning of your gift of love and foregiveness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
